Some of you must have no idea why my lil Adrian was admitted to hospital twice and had surgeries twice. He had been confirmed by surgeons that he was diagnosed with Hirschsprung disease.
“Hirschsprung (HURSH-sprung) disease, or HD, is a disease of the large intestine.
The large intestine is also sometimes called the colon. The word bowel can refer to the large and small intestines. HD usually occurs in children. It causes constipation, which means that bowel movements are difficult. Some children with HD can’t have bowel movements at all. The stool creates a blockage in the intestine.”
The first operation was done but surgeons couldn’t find anything wrong with him because they said our intestine can usually tangled up in a minute, and later it’s back to its original position. Adrian was making a good progress after it, eating as usual and passing stool too. A day after i bring him home, he started showing the earlier symtoms he had before like loss appetite, sluggishness, constipation and so on. We were worried because he didn’t show any sickness nor crying at all, in fact he just slept for quite some time. The day he was re-admitted again (Sunday the 6th) because he vomited greenish mucus after i breastfed him. I knew this isn’t right, and straight away bring him to the hospital emergency department without even taking a shower. We were right, there was something wrong with him.
Surgeon done a couple bowel biopsy on Adrian and found out the two nerve cells he took from Adrian’s bowel is missing, and that’s is why Adrian is not opening his bowel properly and that makes his tummy very full and he ended up not eating and loss weight.
Second surgery (Pull through surgery) was done on the 9th of December, three days after re-admitted from 9 am to 2 pm. It was a long, major surgery, i was alone and scared as Rif couldn’t take leave anymore. But surgeons told us, the surgery was done successfully, they took out the “not-working” intestine and re-attached the intestine back. They told us they cut out about 12cm long, and that’s quite short for a baby that age.
Adrian’s appetite now are getting better and better, alhamdulillah. He passes stool and urine like normal kid would do, isn’t that great! I just have to be alert and cautious on everything now. He’s so precious and fragile, i wouldn’t want him to suffer anything anymore.
P/s: Anyway, we also got a gift for Adrian on 10th of December, a blue car.
